First of all, don’t believe all the hype and take heed. Vitamins and supplements are not regulated like prescription medications, so it is not always easy to know exactly WHAT is in that pill. More thorough regulation is going to come in the future. I know that some of my Derm colleagues believe in the use of some oral supplements for skin problems. Here are a few examples:

Omega 3 fatty acids: facial redness or inflammation.
Vitamin C: wrinkles and aging skin.
Biotin: thinning hair or weak/brittle nails.

Luckily omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin C are good for us for several reasons, so if the skin hype doesn’t hold true, it’s not a bad mistake to make. The only one that I have recommended to my patients is Biotin. Biotin is a B-vitamin that is required for cell-growth. It’s rare for a typical person to have a biotin deficiency, but there have been some studies that show that increased biotin levels may encourage optimal hair and nail growth. If I have a patient with brittle nails or thinning hair, I sometimes provide this as an optional addition to treatment. This is no miracle pill, but it proves helpful for some.
